Municipalities of Iceland

The municipalities in Iceland ( Isl sveitarfélög ) represent the lowest administrative level in Iceland dar.

There are 74 municipalities, including the independent municipalities (as of September 2013). This number has decreased steadily in recent years through mergers community ( inter alia due to rural exodus and for reasons of administrative efficiency).

Below is a list of 78 communities as of 1 January 2010.

In June 2010, the municipalities Arnarnes and Hörgárbyggð were pooled for community Hörgársveit. Previously Grimsey had already been incorporated to Akureyri. In January 2012 Bær was incorporated into Hunathing vestra, a year later after Álftanes Gardabær. These incorporations are not considered here.
