The Murchison Highway is an Australian highway which runs from the west coast of Tasmania in the near Burnie and was opened on December 13, 1963 .. The section of Waratah to Burnie was called to a maximum of 1973 Waratah Highway.

Course

The road starts 4km east of Zeehan as a continuation of the Zeehan Highway and leads first to the north - northeast. At the Pieman River bends to the east and passes through the town Rosebery. 7 km east of the city branches Anthony Main Road (B28 ) from Queenstown and the highway turns north. Then he crossed the Murchison River, runs along the Lake Rosebery north through the settlement Tullah and crosses the Mackintosh River. A little later branches off the Pieman Road ( C252 ) to Reece Dam to the west. The highway continues north and crosses the Bulgobac River and the Que River. There, the Belvoir Road ( C132 ) towards Sheffield branches off to the east. Soon after crossing the Murchison Highway to the Hatfield River and turns to the north-northwest. Between Guildford and Waratah the Mount Road (B23 ) branches off to the Waratah and Savage River in the west and the Ridgley Highway ( B18 ) to Burnie in the north. The highway continues north through Parrawe by the Hellyer Gorge State Reserve, where he crossed the Hellyer River. Past the settlements Oonah and Henrietta, the route continues to the northeast in the small town of Yolla, where to the north the Mount Hicks Road ( B26) branches off to Wynyard. On the last piece to Somerset Murchison Highway passes through the small town of Elliot. In Somerset it is connected to the Bass Highway (A2).

Importance

Before the construction of this highway, most goods were transported from the west coast to the north coast of the Emu Bay Railway or shipped from Regatta Point Strahan or in Macquarie Harbour.

Parts of the highway were roads that were built by Hydro Tasmania during the dam project on the upper Pieman River and the Henty River, superfluous. For example, there is a rapid cross-connection from Queenstown to Tullah just west of the West Coast Range.

Road Conditions

In winter it is to be expected on this road with ice and snow. One of the most dangerous sections of the edge of the Black Mount ( at Rosebery ), where many accidents have happened. The route of Rosebery after Zeehan can be dangerous in cold and wet weather.
