Murupara

Murupara is a town on the North Island of New Zealand. It is located in an isolated part of the Bay of Plenty region between the Kaingaroa Forest and Te Urewera National Park to the banks of the Rangitaiki River, 65 km south-east of Rotorua. Murupara is terminal of Murupara Branch Railway. The main economic activities are connected with forestry. The name Murupara means in the language of Māori " wipe the mud ."

Many years ago the place was a stopping place on the road between Rotorua and Napier. In the early 1900s, began in New Zealand non-native trees in the bush to plant around the place. This area is now known as Kaingaroa Forest and covers 1400 km ² pine forest.

As the main service center for the forestry workers and their families of the place grew, reaching more than 3,000 inhabitants. Changes in the Bewirtschaftsverträgen for the forests have in recent years caused a decrease of permanent residents. The population went from census 1996 census 2006 2205 back to 1836.

The settlements of Galatea, Horomanga, Kopuriki, Aniwhenua, Waiohau and Murupara located between the Kaingaroa Forest, Te Urewera National Park and the the Whirinaki Forest Park.

Petroglyphs in a Felsuntgerschlupf about 8 km west of the city are evidence of early settlement.

In the area there are four holy places Marae Māori.
