Muswellbrook, New South Wales

Muswellbrook is a city in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is the capital of the Muswellbrook Shire Local Government Area. The name is a corruption of the term Muscle Brook (German: Muscle Bach). About the origin and spelling of the name, however, there is a dispute. The Mussel Creek (German: Shell Bach) - Muscle Creek today - was first named by a group of surveyors who found mussels in the small stream at the beginning of the 19th century, when they pitched their tents on its banks. The present spelling of Muswellbrook to be derived from the area of Muswell Hill, London.

The city is a regional center in the upper Hunter Valley, about 243 km north of Sydney. The first Europeans explored the region in 1819; it was the Chief Constable John Howe. In 1833 the settlement was declared a town. At the last census in 2006 had a total population of 10,707 was determined.

The area was known especially for the coal industry and horse breeding. South of the city are two coal-fired power stations, Liddell and Bayswater. They originated in 1973 and 1980 respectively, and provide approximately 500 jobs for the region.

Traffic

Muswellbrook is located at the intersection of two major railway lines, the Main North and the Merriwa, part of the overland route to Gulgong. This was an important transport hub and operated several branch lines to coal mining, which were tied to the track a short distance from the train station.

The train station of Muswellbrook is approached from the CityRail, of the CountryLink, of national and local bus routes.

The New England Highway runs currently still in the city. A route for a bypass has been selected in 2006, but the federal government halted the project in August 2008. Connecting road Muswellbrook - Denman connects the city with the Golden Highway.
