Mykola Shmatko

Mykola Shmatko Hawrylowytsch (Ukrainian Микола Гаврилович Шматько; born August 17, 1943 in Krasnohoriwka in the Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian sculptor and painter.

Life

Mykola Shmatko lives and works in Ukraine. He has two sons, with whom he works for some projects. During his creative path he has created without the support of the State or of the patrons more than 750 monuments ( bas-reliefs, high reliefs, sculptures ) and 500 images. In the gallery " Shmatko & Sons" are exhibited more than 70 sculptures from Uralmarmor and 250 images ( paintings and drawings ). Mykola Shmatko in 2000 was appointed Professor of the Department of Art and Art work of the Moscow Institute of world civilization.

2004 Shmatko was commissioned after long negotiations with the administration of the Donetsk region and the superior of the Lavra Swjatogorsker to design the sculpture of the Mother of God and Swjatogorsker execute in marble. The 4.2 m high sculpture carved Shmatko of 2 blocks Uralmarmor with the combined weight of 40 t. In autumn 2004 the Lavra has been reopened after extensive restoration work with the new sculpture. For his services Shmatko was honored by Vladimir II Sabodan, the Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine, with the Nestor Medal 3rd degree.

In the fall of 2005, the built Preobraschenskaja Church in Keleberda, Poltava oblast was opened by Shmatko sculpture of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
