Namibian Broadcasting Corporation

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation ( NBC), is the only public broadcaster in Namibia. The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation television and radio radiates from since 1991.

The tasks of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation is to inform the people, to educate and to entertain, to promote cultural development as well as peace and stability counts. A total of ten foreign language programs - including one in German language - aired. However, the prime language as official language of Namibia is English.

Foundation

The origins go back to the South West African Broadcasting Corporation ( SWABC ). In 1990, formed from this, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation. The following year, were created by the new broadcasting laws under the so-called Broadcasting Act and the legal basics.

Structure

NBC is run by a board whose members are appointed for five years by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology. This in turn select a general manager as chairman. The Council is committed to the ministry of information and must submit financial reports.

The headquarters of NBC is located in Windhoek. In addition to the head office, especially the television, the National Radio ( NBC National Radio ) and five language services ( Afrikaans, Damara / Nama, German, Otjiherero and Setswana ) are located here at two locations. Four other voice services are in Tsumkwe ( Ha, radio), Katima Mulilo ( Lozi ), Oshakati ( Oshivambo ) and Rundu ( Kwangali ). TV

The NBC radiates three national television programs from:

  • NBC1 can be received in and around the major towns nationwide. There will also be broadcast via satellite on DStv and is therefore theoretically coverage in Namibia receivable. Radio

NBC sends various radio programs:

Cover

Approximately 94 % of the population in Namibia can receive the radio program. The television can be received by about 64 % of the population. To this end, the programs are spread across dozens of relay stations.

The programs are also broadcast by satellite within the country and on the Internet via live stream and YouTube.

Finances

All programs are funded through license fees, government grants and advertising.

The difficult financial situation of the NBC has intensified in the financial year 2007/2008, so that it can be referred to as " de facto bankrupt ". Only with public support of N $ 62.5 million NBC could keep the operation at all upright.
