Nauruan parliamentary election, 2008

The parliamentary elections in Nauru in 2008 were eligible on April 26, 2008 in Nauru approximately 7,000 voters to elect a new parliament. The legislature, in Nauru also called the House, consists of 18 members and is elected usually every three years. It elects a president who is usually chosen according to the national legislative elections of the newly elected MPs with a relative majority. The President-elect shall then his cabinet, which consists of five to six ministers. The President is both head of state and government. The last elections were held on 25 August 2007. The turnout in Nauru should be very high again, because from the age of 20, voting is compulsory.

Parties

In Parliament, a multi -party system; the two opposition parties are the Naoero Amo and the Democratic Party of Nauru. In addition, a conservative, but informal party, the Centre Party exists. The Naoero Amo plays in the political spectrum a prominent role, while the Democratic Party and the Centre Party have little political influence.

The election was won by the government. All supporters of Marcus Stephen were re-elected.
