Neoplecostominae

Pareiorhina hyptiorhachis

The Neoplecostominae are one of the seven subfamilies of armored catfish ( Loricariidae ). The distribution area is located in southeastern Brazil and includes the coastal rivers that flow south of the current territory of the São Francisco River into the sea.

Features

The types of Neoplecostominae be 4 to 17 cm long and have a typical pleco shape with an elongated, flattened body and a flat, provided with a suction mouth head. Characteristic of the subfamily are a common belly -fin spine (not for Hemipsilichthys bahianus ) and the loss of belly armor (not in the genera Isbrueckerichthys and Neoplecostomus ). The types of Neoplecostominae have a similar habitat as the genus of the subfamily Chaetostoma Ancistrinae, namely fast flowing waters in mountainous areas and therefore resemble those in the external shape ( convergent evolution ). But Chaetostoma occurs only in the Andes and in some tepuis in the Guiana Shield, while the Neoplecostominae live in Southeastern Brazil.

Usually the Neoplecostominae are dark brown and show stains or saddle-shaped markings. With the exception of some deeply embedded bony plates in the genera Isbrueckerichthys and Neoplecostomus the belly is unarmored. Before the dorsal fin to count four or more Bone plates on the caudal peduncle is a bone plate number (exceptions are Isbrueckerichthys and an undescribed Hemipsilichthys - kind, five or more bone plate series have ). In contrast to the Chaetostoma Neoplecostominae lack the Odontode on the " cheeks ".
