NHL Heritage Classic

The NHL Heritage Classic (current sponsors name Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic ) is a twice so far been transmitted Outdoor Ice Hockey game of the National Hockey League. The games are regular season games that are played between teams selected at selected locations and adapted to the weather conditions rules.

History

Once was erected in 2001 at a meeting between the college teams of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, a new attendance record for hockey, the National Hockey League decided in 2003 for the first time to discharge a regular season game outdoors. The Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers a preseason game on the Las Vegas Strip as early as 1991 had held before the Caesars Palace.

The first NHL Heritage Classic was held on 22 November 2003 on the occasion of the 25 -year-old league affiliation of the Edmonton Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, as the host Edmonton Oilers met the Montreal Canadiens. In front of a crowd of spectators from 57 167 persons the Canadiens won 4-3. Years later, this idea was taken up again after the NHL Winter Classic had become a permanent event on New Year's Day since 2008. On 20 February 2011, the second NHL Heritage Classic took place in the history of the league, as the Calgary Flames at McMahon Stadium met on the Montreal Canadiens.

Mode

In contrast to the NHL games in the hall league some minor rule changes allowed for in the open-air games, so the opportunity is given in adverse conditions for both teams. Due to the expected wind change teams usually halfway through the final third once again the pages so that each team plays one of the two gates every 30 minutes.
