History

The first " Tim Horton " ( the "s" was added later ) restaurant opened in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. The company was founded by Tim Horton, who was a famous hockey player of the National Hockey League. Soon after Horton opened his first store, he met Ron Joyce, a former police officer from Hamilton. 1965 Joyce took over the management of the first restaurants opened until 1967 and two more. Joyce and Horton were equal partners of the company. After the death of Horton in 1974 in a car accident Joyce took over his shares and became the sole owner of the existing 40 stores. Now began a period of aggressive expansion of the branch network and product selection. 1991 already, the 500th store in Aylmer, Quebec was opened.

The aggressive expansion of Tim Hortons had two major changes in the coffee and donut market result: independent donut shops were eliminated almost completely in Canada, and the ratio of donut shops to population now exceeds all other states.

On 8 August 1995 merged Tim Hortons ( TDL Group) with Wendy's International Inc. The merger was Joyce 's largest shareholder in Wendy's. Under the leadership of Wendy's many combined branches were opened with two brands in Canada and the northeastern United States.

2004 Tim Hortons expanded into the U.S. Rhode Iceland, Connecticut and Massachusetts through the acquisition of 42 " Bess Eaton coffee and donut restaurants ."

Due to the strength and profitability of the Tim Hortons brand sold Wendy's International Inc. in March 2006, under pressure from the shareholders 15-18 % of its shares in TDL Group. The rest of the shares to be sold by the end of 2006.
