Nigerien presidential election, 2011

The first round of the presidential elections in Niger in 2011 was held together with the parliamentary elections in Niger in 2011 on January 31, 2011. Originally the first ballot had been planned for January 3rd, but was then postponed to this date. The run-off election between the two most successful candidates in the first ballot Mahamadou Issoufou and Seini Oumarou on March 12, 2011. In it, the opposition candidate Mahamadou Issoufou sat with 58 percent of the vote against by Seini Oumarou. International and domestic observers certified the election process unanimous that he is peaceful and compliant expired.

On April 6, 2011, Mahamadou Issoufou was sworn in as president-elect of the Niger.

The elections are the result of a commitment by the military government of Niger from 2010. In February 2010, the military had geputscht the increasingly autocratic President Mamadou Tandja ruling from office. A successful constitutional referendum in the same year had guaranteed them immunity for their coup on the one hand, on the other hand, they were obliged to hand over power to 6 April 2011, after parliamentary and presidential elections to a civilian government.

Strategic alliance in the run-up to the election

In July 2010, 17 different parties had agreed a strategic alliance. Then they wanted to establish their own, although presidential candidates in the first round of elections, support in the second round, so the runoff, but closed to those candidates of the alliance, which would make it into the runoff. The parties to this alliance had come together in 2009 against then- President Tandja when he tried to extend his rule beyond the constitutional end addition. The main candidates

Candidate of the Alliance:

  • Hama Amadou from 1995 to 1996 and Prime Minister from 2000 to 2007 and a member of the party Tandja. He was accused of corruption and spent some time in jail until he was released on medical parole and went to France. He denied all allegations of corruption and claimed to be the victim of a political plot. After the coup in 2010, he returned to the Niger and founded the FASHIONS -FA Lumana Africa his own party.
  • Mahamane Ousmane was democratically elected in 1993 as the first President of Niger. He was a putsch from office in 1996.
  • Mahamadou Issoufou was prime minister of niger 1993 to 1996. In the presidential elections in Niger in 1999 he reached the final ballot, in which he then but Tandja Mamadou with 40 % of the vote clearly defeated.

Other candidates:

  • Seini Oumarou was from 2007 to 2010 coup prime minister under Tandja Mamadou and president of his party MNSD - Nassara.
  • Amadou Cheiffou was Prime Minister from 1991 to 1993 and reached in the presidential elections in Niger in 2004 just over 6% of the votes cast.

Results

Runoff March 12, 2011

As a result of the first round Mahamadou Issoufou and Seini Oumarou received the most votes and thus the right to stand in the second ballot on 12 March against each other. Hama Amadou party FASHIONS -FA Lumana Africa called shortly after the announcement of the results as agreed his supporters to support the candidate Mahamadou Issoufou alliance. A day later with Cheffou Amadou Moussa Amadou Boubacar Cisse Moumouni Djermakoye and explained further unsuccessful candidates of the first round of their support for Issoufou.

According to provisional data, Mahamadou Issoufou Electoral Commission also won the runoff election with about 58 percent of the vote against 42 percent for Seini Oumarou.
