Nikolai Lugansky

Nikolai Lugansky Lvovitch (also: Nikolai Lugansky, Russian Николай Львович Луганский; born April 26, 1972 in Moscow ) is a Russian pianist.

Life

At age five he received his first music lessons after his parents, a Russian scientist couple, his absolute pitch and his musical talent had recognized. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Tatiana Kestner, Tatiana Nikolaeva and Sergei Dorenski. At sixteen, he won the 8th International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig the silver medal and two years later at the Rachmaninoff Competition in Moscow the 2nd prize. Began in 1994 with the victory at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in his international career.

He has worked with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Neeme and Paavo Järvi, Mikhail Pletnev, Kurt Masur, Marek Janowski, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Temirkanov, Sakari Oramo, Vladimir Jurowski, Emmanuel Krivine, Sir Charles Mackerras and Kent Nagano. In the festivals of Verbier, La Roque- d'Anthéron, Gstaad and at the BBC Proms, he is a regular guest. His repertoire includes over 40 piano concertos from Bach to Shostakovich. He also occurs among others, as a chamber musician with Vadim Repin ( violin ), Alexander Kniazew (cello), Vadim Rudenko (piano) and Yevgeny Petrov ( clarinet) on.

Since his recording of Benjamin Britten's " Young Apollo" 1999 he has been at Warner Classics under contract. Nikolai Luganskis CD recordings have been awarded (see discography ).

In addition to his concert career he taught at the Moscow Conservatory as an assistant to Sergei Dorenski.
