Noma Award for Publishing in Africa

The Noma Award for African Literature (Japanese野間 アフリカ 出版 賞, Noma Afurika Shuppanshō, English Noma Award for Publishing in Africa / French Le Prix de Noma Publication en Afrique ) was founded in 1979 by Japanese publisher Shoichi Noma and 1980-2009 annual awarded to African writers and scholars whose work has been published in Africa. The price was endowed with 10 000 U.S. dollars, and was supported by the Japanese publishing house Kodansha. He was awarded for a new release in one of the following three categories:

  • Scientific or academic work
  • Children's book
  • Literary work

The work could be written in both an African and a European language.

After 30 years of generous funding from the Noma family, the prize was awarded to the Nigerian writer Sefi Atta for the last time in 2009.
