Noor Hassanali

Noor Hassanali TC ( * August 13, 1918 as Noor Mohammed Hassanali in San Fernando, Trinidad, † August 25, 2006 in Port of Spain ) from 1987 to 1997, the second president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Origin and study

Hassanali was born the sixth of seven children of a Muslim family in 1918. He attended from 1938 to 1943 the prestigious Naparima College in San Fernando, where he gained his high-school education, and later the university entrance. He then studied until 1947 at the University of Toronto. He was there also a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps in Army service. In June 1948 he was called to the Bar on Gray 's Inn and was admitted in August this year to practice in Trinidad and Tobago. He was later self-employed as a lawyer.

Career and career as a judge

In 1953 he became a magistrate in Victoria, Tobago, St. Patrick, Caroni and St. George. In 1960, he was then Chief Judge. He was also in this year also Senior Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers. In 1965 he was appointed Assistant Solicitor General. In 1978 he was Justice of Appeal of the Supreme Court.

Hassanali was also from 1985 to 1987 Master of the Moots at the Hugh Wooding Law School and at various government agencies such as the Judicial and Legal Service Commission (1985-1987 ) and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Commissions Board ( 1985-1987) operates.

President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

On March 19, 1987 Noor Hassanali was elected to succeed Ellis Clarke 's second president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. He was thus Head of State and Commander in Chief of the armed forces of Trinidad and Tobago. He ruled for two terms and was replaced by former prime minister Arthur NR Robinson on March 19, 1997.

Awards

Hassanali was honored with several awards such as the Bronze Medal of the University of Toronto (1947 ) and the Honorary Diploma of the San Fernando Borough Council.
