Norman Allinger

Norman Louis " Lou" Allinger ( born April 6, 1928 in California) is an American theoretical chemist and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Life

Allinger earned a bachelor's degree in 1951 from the University of California, Berkeley in 1954 with Donald J. Cram a Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He belonged to the faculty of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, before 1969 a professor at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia received. In 1998 he became Professor Emeritus.

Work

Allinger is a representative of computational chemistry (computational chemistry ), a branch of theoretical chemistry. He is considered a leader in the field of molecular mechanics ( molecular mechanics ), with the aid can shape and calculate energy of molecules. Its methods are used around the world, for example in conjunction with ligand-receptor and enzyme-substrate interactions. Various computer programs for the calculation of molecules go back to Allinger, including the Molecular Mechanics -1 ( MM1 ), MM2, MM3 and MM4.
