Novi Slankamen

Novi Slankamen ( German ( obsolete): New Slankamen, Cyrillic Нови Сланкамен, Hungarian Újszalánkemén ) is a place in the Opština Inđija, in the Serbian province of Vojvodina. Novi Slankamen is located east-southeast of Novi Sad. Novi Slankamen was founded in 1783. Slankamen means to German salt stone.

Population

Slankamen has 2,994 inhabitants ( 2011).

The Serbs constituted 79 % of the population, the Croats 15.7%, the rest are minorities of Yugoslavs, Montenegrins, Roma, Hungarians, Slovaks, Slav Macedonians, Russians, Ukrainians and Czechs. Also 2 Donauschwaben live in Novi Slankamen.

In 1991, the share of the Croatian population was 65.6 %. After many threats from Serbian extremists, most of the Croatian population fled during the Croatian War. Between 26 and October 30, 1992 1,600 people have (mostly Croats ), the Roman Catholic parish of Novi Slankamen leave.

Few politicians in Serbia have called these events in Slankamen, Golubinci and Hrtkovci as ethnic cleansing. 2002, the proportion of the Croats was 22 %.
