Nový Jičín

Nový Jičín ( German New Titschein, formerly Neutitschein ) is a city in Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. Nový Jičín located 32 km south-west of Ostrava and has about 24,000 inhabitants.

History

Probably the foundation of the city falls into the 13th century. 1313 Neutitschein received its town charter, which was also associated with the right to collect customs duties. Located in the middle of the Kuhländchens, the city's cloth production ( company price hammer, founded in 1786) was famous for its cattle markets, and the manufacture of hats ( company founded Hückel, 1799). Neutitschein was the birthplace of the painter Hugo Baar, Julius Berger, Anton Kolig and Eduard Veith. At the town square, 29 died on July 14, 1790, the Austrian commander Ernst Gideon von Laudon.

1930 were counted 13 997 inhabitants, of whom 4,236 were Czechs. On May 17, 1939 in 1938 due to the Munich Agreement is annexed to the German Empire City New Titschein 13,486 inhabitants, and on 17 May 1947 had 11,406 inhabitants. Until 1945 were Sudeten Germans, formerly called Deutschmährer, the strongest population, at the same time was the area around Neutitschein but because of the mixed population also one of the centers of resistance against the Nazis.

From 1938 to 1945, the city was the seat of the district of Neu Titschein.

Because of the Beneš decrees, the German population was expropriated in 1945 and sold.

Since 1967, the center of the main town of the Okres Nový Jičín stands with its numerous architectural monuments conservation.

Districts

The town of Nový Jičín the districts include Bludovice ( blue village), Kojetin ( Kojetein ) Libhošť ( Liebisch ) Loučka ( Ehrenberg ), Straník ( Stranik ) and Žilina ( Söhle or Sehlen ).

In a referendum on 11 April 2010, the inhabitants of the district Libhošť have decided that this district is independent again. Libhošť why, after almost forty years of interruption on 1 January 2011 again an independent municipality.

Economy

Today, the largest employers are the Nový Jicin Hutfabrik J. Hückel 's Söhne, founded by Johann Hückel, now under the name Tonak, and the auto supplier Autopal where headlights and parts are manufactured for air conditioners; However, there is the bulk of the production site of this car supplier in neighboring Šenov u Nového Jicína.

Twinning

Since 1981, Nový Jičín is the sister city of Görlitz. 2003, the partnership Görlitz / Nový Jičín by the Czech-German Information Centre IDOR was awarded a certificate of honor. However, Görlitz is not the only partner Nový Jicin:

Sports

The most popular sport in the city is basketball. Mlékárna Miltra Nový Jičín was in season 1998/1999 Czech champion, at that time still under the name Mlékárna Kunín. In the playoffs, the club was able to prove several times the second and third place, five times one winner was in the cup competition.

When the inhabitants of the city relatively popular is the Hockey of Lords. The TJ Nový Jičín regularly takes part in the play-off round of the second division.
