Obira, Hokkaido

Obira (Japanese小平 町, -chō ) is a town in the district Rumoi in the sub-prefecture Rumoi on Hokkaidō.

Etymology

The name comes from Ainu Obira o- pira -us -pet, which means " at the mouth - River - be - cliff ". This refers to the current flowing through the city center Obirashibe (小平 蕊 川, -gawa ).

Geography

Within the municipal boundaries are the mountains Poroshiri (ポロシリ 山, -yama ) with 731 m, Tengu -yama (天狗 山; see Tengu ) with 376 m and Obirashibe -dake (小平 蕊 岳) with 961 m height for Teshio - Bergland (天 塩 山地, Teshio - sanchi ) belong.

History

On 1 July 1919, the district town for Rumoi (today acyclic ) belonging village was Obirashibe (小平 蕊 村, -mura ) independently as a 2nd class municipality. The Town Hall was originally located in the district Usuya (臼 谷) and in 1924 moved to the center.

On 1 January 1948 Obirashibe was renamed Obira. On September 30, 1956, the village Onishika founded on August 15, 1887, incorporated (鬼 鹿 村, -mura ). Since that time Obira is the only municipality in the county. On September 1, 1966, the appointment was made for Chō.

In Obira are the primary schools Obira, Tappu (达布) Hongō (本 郷), Neiraku (宁 楽) Usuya and Onishika, the middle schools Obira, Hongō and Onishika.
