Olav H. Hauge

Olav Hauge Håkonson ( born August 18, 1908 in Ulvik, † May 23, 1994 ) was a Norwegian poet and translator. Among the most important motifs of his poetry include the nature of Western Norway. He was also influenced by foreign languages ​​, European and Far Eastern poetry.

Life

Hauge was born in Ulvik in Hardanger Fylke western Norway, the son of Håkon Hauge, a farmer, and Katrina Hakestad. As a child he read a lot, both Norwegian and English, and later German and French literature. Hauge visited agricultural schools, then Norges Landbrukshøgskole (Norwegian College of Agriculture ). After that, he was a gardener in Ulvik.

Since 1927, published Hauge poems in magazines, but his first book was not published until 1946. From then on, he regularly published volumes of poetry, as of 1967 also translations of foreign poetry, including by Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Hölderlin, Alfred Tennyson, William Butler Yeats and Arthur Rimbaud. With his wife Bodil Cappelen he wrote the children's book ABC, which was published in 1986, and a poem for each letter of the alphabet contains. After his death, his diaries were published, which he had led since 1924. 2006 a selection of his poems was published in German. Also, there are translations into English.

Hauge has been awarded a number of literary awards, including the Critics pinches (1961 ), the Doblougpreis (1969 ) and the Aschehougpreis (1978).
