Old Cathedral of Managua

The Santiago de Managua Cathedral is the ruins of the old Cathedral of Managua. It is located in the Plaza de la Revolution, formerly Plaza de la República. It was built as a steel-framed building clad in neo-classical style. The facade layout is similar to that of St- Sulpice de Paris.

Cathedrals in Managua

The first cathedral of Managua had built in 1783, the priest Juan Antonio Chamorro. Monsignor Lezcano y Ortega was ordained on May 3, 1914 Simeón Pereira y Castellón, the first bishop of León and last of Nicaragua, and Cándido Piñol y Batres, the first bishop of Granada, in the first cathedral of Managua. Laying the foundation stone

For the Catedral de Santiago de Managua, José Carlos Solórzano Gutiérrez on April 5, 1925 the foundation stone. Earthquake in 1931

On March 31, 1931 at 10:33 clock Managua was destroyed by an earthquake of 5.6 degrees on the Richter scale and killed more than 1,000 people. Monsignor Lezcano rescued with his own hands the ashes of Jose Dolores Estrada Vado and then helped the victims. The metal construction of the cathedral remained intact, such as a photograph shows.

Of Somoza's Cathedral

On December 1, 1938 Anastasio Somoza García opened the cathedral. In the cathedral of Anastasio Somoza García's birthday married, February 1, 1943 his eldest daughter Lillian Somoza Debayle Dr. Guillermo Sevilla Sacasa, this was followed until 1979 Ambassador of the Somoza family in Washington. 1972 earthquake

On December 23, 1972 at 12:35 clock in Managua there was a quake of 6.2 degrees on the Richter scale and two aftershocks at 13:18 and 13:20 clock. This destroyed the center of Managua and killed about 11,000 people, of the cathedral collapsed the roof.
