Olmeta-di-Tuda

Olmeta -di- Tuda is a municipality with 377 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Haute- Corse on the French island of Corsica.

Geography

Olmeta -di- Tuda located in the northeast of Corsica in the Nebbio to an average height of 115 meters above sea level, 13 kilometers southwest of the port city of Bastia, the seat of the prefecture of the Haute -Corse. The village is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Valle Calle, Oletta and Rutali. The municipality has an area of ​​17.4 square kilometers.

History

The place name is Olmeta from the Corsican word for olmu, elm derived '.

During World War II (1939-1945) Olmeta -di- Tuda was the scene of a liberation battle. On September 30, 1943 fought the Corsican Résistance together with the 1st Regiment of Tirailleurs marocains (, skirmishers from French Morocco ') against the German occupiers. At the site of the battle, a memorial was later built.

The Church de l' Assomption (' Assumption ') was built in the 17th century in the style of classical Renaissance. It has two small bell towers, tower over the entrance facade. In the church there are three paintings from the 17th century. " The Annunciation" 1627 painted by the artist dating from Bastia Nicolao Castigliani. The " Sacrifice of Isaac " was by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) painted. The third painting depicts the Jesus who sells the merchants from the temple. The Château de Tuda castle consists of two mansions from the 16th century, which originally belonged to the seigneurial family Campocasso and the Kammerprokurator Casale. Louis Visconti (1791-1853) joined the building in the 19th century. Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (1889-1952) used the palace in 1943 during the liberation of Corsica as headquarters. The castle is now privately owned and is entered in the additional list of Monuments historiques.

There are still some buildings that belong to a copper mine, which was established in the 19th century. The operation was finally closed in 1909.
