Oñati

Oñate [ o'ɲati ] (Basque, Spanish Oñate ) is a town with 11,202 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country in northern Spain.

The medieval town, founded in 1467 is located in the southwest of Gipuzkoa in the midst of the Basque mountains. Known are the nine kilometers away from the village Sanctuary Arantzazu and the University 1540/43 and 1901 closed founded by Oñate, the oldest University of the Basque Country. The university building is the most important Renaissance building of the Basque Country. It houses since 1988, the International Institute for the Sociology of Law.

1968 ground-breaking for the standardization of the Basque language Congress was held in Arantzazu.
