Opera Rara

Opera Rara is a British company which the performance of forgotten operas by Giacomo Meyerbeer, Donizetti and other bel canto composers dedicated.

History

The company was founded in 1970 by the two Americans Patric Schmid and Don White in London. For many years, the Opera Rara was supported by the " Peter Moores Foundation". 1972 realized the Opera Rara as the first project the performance of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera "Il Crociato in Egitto ". In 1977, with Gaetano Donizetti's " Ugo Conte di Parigi " the first recording session of the society.

The recordings, initially primarily intended to advertise the performances of operas were accepted and sold around the world under opera friends. Now, the label brought out many first recordings, including works by Saverio Mercadante, Giovanni Pacini, Jacques Offenbach, Giovanni Simone Mayr, Vincenzo Bellini, Gioacchino Rossini, Federico Ricci, Ferdinando Paer and recordings of the original versions of various operas of Giuseppe Verdi.

Both the performances and the recordings were partly occupied with renowned soloists such as Renee Fleming, Jane Eaglen or Vesselina Kasarova. With many artists, including Yvonne Kenny, Della Jones, Diana Montague, Nelly Miricioiu, Jennifer Larmore, Bruce Ford, Christian du Plessis, Alastair Miles, a long-term cooperation developed. Among the conductors of the Opera Rara - projects include David Parry, Alun Francis, James Judd and Charles Mackerras. 2011 took over the conductor Mark Elder, the artistic director of the Opera Rara.
