Orinoca Canton

The Canton Orinoca is an administrative district in the department of Oruro in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The Cantón Orinoca is located in the district ( bolivian: Municipio) Andamarca in the province of Sud Carangas at an average altitude of 3800 m on the western shore of the lake Poopó, 180 kilometers south of Oruro. It has a north-south and east- west distance of 35 kilometers.

Geography

The Canton Orinaca located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano and west of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central. The region is characterized by a pronounced diurnal climate where the temperatures between day and night fluctuate more than in the average year.

71.4 % of the population are Roman Catholic, 17.5% Protestant.

The Bolivian President Evo Morales comes from the village Isallawi in Cantón Orinoca.

Standard of living

97.5 % of households have no sanitary facilities, 100 % of households without electricity (1992).

Economy and Transport

The population of the canton of lives predominantly from agricultural crops ( potatoes, wheat, corn, onions) and extensive livestock ( llama and vicuna ). Orinoca is only accessible via road links, the Cantón Capital Orinoca is approached twice weekly by a bus.
