The castle is historically documented in the Zealand Chronicle, after which it was burned down in 1316 by Captain Eskil octopus. He prevented so a month successfully the advance of the Danish troops, the camp but eventually had to give up and retreat to Markaryd because of scarce supplies and increasingly frequent attacks by the Snapphanar ( local irregulars ). The remains of that time established bearing walls can be seen to this day in the field.

At the end of the Great Northern War the 16th and 17th century the population was in Örkelljunga shrunk to a few hundred inhabitants, completely impoverished and economically meaningless. It was not until the early 19th century the region and recovered slowly, and now about 1,500 until then mainly small rural living inhabitants organized themselves into larger farms. At the same time began in Örkelljunga but - as in other parts of Sweden and Western Europe - a large, driven by poverty, discontent and rumors of gold discoveries in California emigration (see Swedish emigration in the 19th century), which reached its peak in the 1880s, as alone in Örkelljunga 431 emigrants were counted in 10 years.

The connection Örkelljungas to the railway line from Kärreberga (municipality Åstorp ) to Värnamo 1894 brought the region eventually a significant economic upturn. Until the late 1960s, this branch line was used for passenger rail with buses, and even today there are efforts to revive this ancient connection.
