Owen Chadwick

William Owen Chadwick OM, KBE, FBA, FRSE ( born May 20, 1916) is a British university professor, historian, writer and theologian.

Life

Chadwick attended Cuddesdon theological college and was ordained a priest in the Church of England. After the end of World War II, he was a chaplain in Tonbridge and Fellow at Trinity Hall. From 1956 until his retirement in 1983 he was rector of Selwyn College at Cambridge University. In 1968 he was appointed as the successor of Herbert Butterfield Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, he was the Chair in 1982 again. He was president of the British Academy in the early 1980s and 1984-1994 Vice - Chancellor of the University of East Anglia.

Chadwick is the author of numerous books, this deal among other things with the papacy in modern times, Lord Acton, secularization and reformation.

His appointment as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire would involve basically the elevation to personal nobility (Sir). As Chadwick, however, could receive as a clergyman no knighthood, he is not entitled to this address.
