Paihia

Paihia is located in the north of the North Island of New Zealand in the Far North District of Northland Region, 60 kilometers north of Whangarei. Once a small fishing village, the town lying in the Bay of Islands is now a popular tourist center of the North Island.

Paihia is known for the nearby village of Waitangi. There, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Also, the first New Zealand cricket match was held in Paihia. On the other side of the bay the small town of Russell, from 1840 to 1841 is the first capital of New Zealand.

In Paihia New Zealand 's first church was built. It was opened on 21 September 1823. The present stone church, St Paul 's Anglican Church, is the fifth church on this site. It was built in 1925.
