Waitangi (Northland)

Waitangi is a district of the New Zealand town of Paihia. It is located in the Northland region near the Bay of Islands. In Waitangi live according to the last census 2006 792 people, Paihia has a total of 7250 inhabitants. Most people depend on tourism, few can still live from fishing and boat building.

On February 6, 1840 in a tent in front of the " Treaty House " (see picture left) of the Treaty of Waitangi by representatives of Britain and some Maori leaders ratified together. Through this international treaty New Zealand officially became a colony and thus belonged to the British Empire. This date is regarded as the " birth " of modern New Zealand. Therefore is the 6th of February, the National Day of the country, called Waitangi Day.

On the grounds of the Treaty House can be a meeting house of the Maori (Te Whare Runanga ) and visit a boathouse.
