Pailin

City

Pailin (Khmer: ប៉ៃលិន; pronunciation in IPA: [ Pailin ], Pailin ) is a city in western Cambodia near the border of Thailand, approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Battambang and 20 kilometers from the Thai border. In Pailin live about 30,000 inhabitants ( 2004).

It has long been Pailin as a " secretive " place in Western Cambodia: served 1979-1997, the region around Pailin as a retreat leading Khmer Rouge officials ( Ieng Sary, Nuon Chea ), which with its guerrilla forces against the government in Phnom Penh fought.

History

Although the Khmer Rouge had in 1991 signed the Paris Peace Treaty of Paris, they rejected the disarmament of their forces. In 1992, the UNTAC chief Yasushi Akashi wanted to go to Pailin, this denied him access. The 1993 elections were boycotted by the Khmer Rouge. 1994 Pailin was captured by government troops, Hun Sen, the Khmer Rouge fled. However, few weeks later, they regained control over "their" city.

Signed in 1996, the Khmer Rouge in Pailin under Ieng Sary an agreement with Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Khmer Rouge committed themselves to give up their armed resistance and not to interfere in the political debates between the CPP, Hun Sen and FUNCINPEC, Prince Norodom Ranariddh. But the Khmer Rouge in return received amnesty and permission to exclusively exploit the rich gemstone and precious forest resources in Pailin and marketable. By 2001 Pailin was part of the province of Battambang, Pailin since then enjoys the status of a special zone. The governor of Pailin is Chheau Ee, a former bodyguard of Pol Pot.

1997 came Pailin in the headlines - at least in Cambodia: a peace march led by the Buddhist monk Maha Ghosananda, the " Gandhi " of Cambodia, led from Battambang to Pailin. After the arrival of Friedensmarschierer in Pailin, there was a brief meeting between Ieng Sary and Ghosananda. In June 2005, King Norodom Sihamoni visited Pailin, to a meeting with Nuon Chea and Ieng Sary it did not - for the sake of their " old age " and their " poor health ".

Economy

The economy is based Pailins today on three main pillars: the gemstone mines, the fine wood resources and the game casinos on the Cambodian- Thai border. Operator of the Casino Caesar International are the Khmer Rouge Ieng Sary functionary and the son of the Cambodian tycoon Teng Bunma. In addition, Pailin is the basis for the clearing of mines that had been laid in the period 1975-1991 in the region.
