Palla

(Also called Palla 21 = " Ball 21 " ) Palla EH is a common in southern Tuscany team ball game. It goes back to ancient roots, similar to the French Jeu de Paume and therefore is regarded by some players as a precursor of tennis, with which it has the counting system together and having some other parallels. Other features it has in common with the thumb ball.

His name carries it from the regular loud exclamation of players at impact ( Eh! ).

History

By 1300, the game is in Ciciano, a hamlet ( frazione ) of the municipality of Chiusdino (Province of Siena ), first occupied. The locals have long been convinced to be the author of this game, until it turned out that it was already in antiquity putative precursor was ( Follis, Pila Trigonalis, Pila Paganica, Harpastum ), the exact rules no longer are, however, understandable, and that variants the game will be accepted for the same roots, today also occur in other European countries (France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Denmark).

One of these lines of development leads presumably to the Jeu de Paume and the tennis, other ball to fist.

Palla eh! in the narrower sense, that is, according to the rules of Ciciano, is, however, played only a few places in Tuscany in the provinces of Siena and Grosseto except at the origin:

The game today

It is a game in which two teams of 3-5 players compete against each other. It takes place on the open road, where the court ( usually a traffic sloping alley in a borgo ) is pre- selected. Players spread anywhere on the pitch.

The goal is to ( approximately 35-40 g in weight lead core covered with leather, ) to get the ball from one end of the highlighted field to the other. He needs to be leaked with the flat hand alternately, each a player of the one and the other team; he may even come up on the floor between these bobbling. Made a mistake, there are points for the opposing team and may this new set up.

It is counted as in tennis: 15-30-40- advantage - game win - set win. It is sometimes also counted 7-14-21 (hence: Palla 21). A set consists of three games; has a team already won 2 games, the set is so decided. We will play for a match three sets, the first two are won by the same team, it's decided.

After each game, the direction is changed (alternating the alley is so played uphill and downhill).
