Roccastrada

Rocca Strada is a town with 9409 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site extends over 284 km ². It is located about 25 km north of Grosseto and 90 km southeast of Florence, between the Maremma and the Metalliferous Hills in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, ​​2181 GG.

Its neighborhoods include Montemassi Piloni, Ribolla, Roccatederighi Sassofortino Sticciano and Torniella.

The neighboring municipalities are Campagnatico, Chiusdino (SI), Civitella Paganico, Gavorrano, Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Monticiano (SI) and Montieri.

History

The village was founded in the Middle Ages as a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family. In the 12th century Rocca Strada was conquered by the Republic of Siena. After the defeat of the Sienese Republic against the Florentine in 1555, the town was part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. After the unification of Italy, the place was assigned to the province of Grosseto.

Attractions

  • Abbazia di San Salvatore in Giugnano, 867 for the first time in writing mentioned by the San Salvatore di Monte Amiata Monastery Abbey about 5 km south-west of the capital. Was in 1027 by Konrad III. also mentioned in writing. Shelter since 1208, the Abbey San Galgano, but already in 1308 led the Augustinian Order of the abbey.
