Montemassi

Montemassi is a hamlet of Rocca Strada in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy. He had 176 inhabitants in 2001.

Geography

The town is located 8.7 km west of the capital Rocca Strada, 26 km north of the provincial capital Grosseto, 87 km south of Florence and 42 km south-west of Siena. The place is located in the countryside of the Maremma and the Metalliferous Hills at 280 meters above sea level. Just south borders the place Ribolla.

History

The Castello di Montemassi was probably around the year 1000 as a castle of Aldobrandeschi with Borgo ( lower city ) and connected city wall. First mentioned is the place in 1076 in a deed of Ildebrandino Aldobrandeschi who bequeathed the castle church property. Prior to the Battle of Montaperti the place was supported in 1259 by Florence and excited to rebellion against Siena.
