Sassofortino

Sassofortino is a hamlet of Rocca Strada in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy. He had 815 inhabitants in 2001.

Geography

The place is situated 4.8 km north-west of the capital Rocca Strada, 29 km north of the provincial capital Grosseto, 84 km south of Florence and 37 km south-west of Siena. The place is located in the countryside of the Maremma and the Metalliferous Hills at 560 meters altitude below the mountain Monte Sassoforte ( 787 meters altitude). The Castello di Sassoforte is located about 1 km north- west of the town.

History

The Castello di Sassoforte castle was first mentioned in a 1076 document of the Aldobrandeschi as Saxoforte than Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi bequeathed some of his possessions of the Church of Montemassi. The Borgo (Lower Town ) was first mentioned in the 12th century. The Aldobrandeschi then gave their land as a fiefdom to the local gentlemen Uguccione because Sassoforte degli Ardengheschi, which was confirmed in 1221 by Frederick II. After the defeat of the Sienese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence, the city fell to the Duchy of Tuscany as well ( such as Siena ). After the unification of Italy in 1861, the town was part of the municipality of Rocca Strada.
