Santa Fiora

Santa Fiora is a municipality with 2649 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto in Italy.

Geography

It is located about 40 km east of the provincial capital Grosseto and about 110 south of Florence and has an area of 62.9 km ². It lies on the River Fiora and close to Monte Calvo (930 m, located in the southern municipality ), Mount Labbro to the west and Mount Amiata in the north in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, ​​2269 GG.

The main town is divided into three city -thirds, called Terzieri. The highest and oldest third ( Terziere ) is Castello, there is the Rocca and the present Palazzo Sforza Cesarini. The Terziere Castello is joined by the Via Carolina and the city gate Porticciola with the third Borgo. Through the Porta San Michele ( Porta di Borgo ) you will reach Montecatino, the youngest city thirds. Here the Peschiera is created.

The districts include Bagnolo ( 800 m), Bagnore (780 m), Marroneto ( 690 m) and Selva ( 788 m).

The neighboring municipalities are Abbadia San Salvatore ( SI), Arcidosso, Castel del Piano, Castell'Azzara, Piancastagnaio (SI), Roccalbegna and Semproniano.

History

The first mention of the village was 890 in a document which dealt with border issues with Abbadia San Salvatore. Finds from the Neolithic period and the time of the Etruscans and Romans suggest an earlier colonization. Fixing work of Aldobrandeschi are detected from the year 1082. Since 1141 evidence writings from Castello Santa Flore. 1274 shared the family of Aldobrandeschi into two branches. One was headquartered in Santa Fiora, the other resided in Sovana and Pitigliano.   • Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, church in Terziere Borgo, 1146 as Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo emerged with campanile from the 14th century.
