Monterotondo Marittimo

Monterotondo Marittimo is a municipality with 1397 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality extends over about 103 km ². It is located about 45 km northwest of Grosseto and 80 km southwest of Florence in the Metalliferous Hills and in the Val di Cornia (Val di Cornia ). Monterotondo Marit Timo is located in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, ​​2270 GG. Due to the location within the river Cornia flows (9 of 49 km in the municipality ) and the Torrente Milia (12 of 20 km in the municipality ).

The districts include Frassine and Lake Boracifero.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina ( PI), Massa Marittima, Monteverdi Marittimo ( PI), Montieri, Pomarance ( PI) and Suvereto ( LI).

History

The village was founded in the Middle Ages as part of the Abbey of Monte Marittimo, then the Alberti family took control of the area. From the 13th century until the first half of the 14th century was under the site of the municipality of Massa Marittima, which gave him after his defeat by the Republic of Siena to sameness. After the defeat of the Sienese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence, the city fell to the Duchy of Tuscany.
