Chiusdino

Chiusdino is a town with 1876 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site extends over 141 km ². It is located about 30 km southwest of Siena and 70 km south of Florence in the hills of the Metalliferous Hills and Val di Merse ( Val di Merse ). Chiusdino lies in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone E, 2303 GR / G.

Districts are Ciciano (506 meters altitude, about 300 inhabitants), Frassini (350 meters altitude, about 150 inhabitants), Frosini ( 346 meters altitude, about 50 inhabitants), Montalcinello ( 378 meters altitude, about 150 inhabitants) and palazzetto ( 347 vertical meters, about 100 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Casole d' Elsa, Monticiano, Montieri (GR), Radicondoli, Rocca Strada (GR) and Sovicille.

History

First settlements originate probably from the time of the Lombards in the 6th century. The place has been decorated by the bishops of Volterra with a castle in the 12th century and expanded. These received their rule until 1230, when the city of Siena was conquered after a long siege. 1554 conquered Florence in the course of the war against Siena the place of the free commune in 1776. At the end of the 18th century the town was conquered by Napoleon's troops, who remained until 1814. Then Chiusdino was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, where it remained until 1861 and was then integrated into the Kingdom of Italy.

  • Abbazia San Galgano
  • Chiesa della Madonna del Buon Consiglio, church in the district of Frosini, contains the works Visione di San Galgano by Pietro Benvenuti and Santa Teresa by Carlo Dolci.
  • Hermitage of Santa Lucia a Rosia, Hermitage near Rosia at Sovicille, but still the municipality of Chiusdino belonging. Was built in the 12th century, the related Santa Lucia Church was begun in 1252 and consecrated in 1267. Since 1575 it belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena.
  • Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, built in the 15th century shrine. Was in the 1555 conflict between Siena and Florence heavily damaged and restored in 1564.

Chiusdino has a superbly maintained and for the most part still inhabited medieval town center.
