Radda in Chianti

Radda in Chianti ( Radda usually only ) is a town with 1706 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site extends over 80 km ². Radda is located in the wine region of Chianti Classico and is characterized by a large height difference. The main town lies at an altitude of 530 meters, while the lowest-lying district Lucarelli is about 280 m. The highest point of the municipality lies at 845 m on Mount Querciabella. In the municipality stems from the River Staggia. In addition, the Pesa through the village.

Its neighborhoods include Badia a Montemuro, Colle Petroso, La Villa, Lucarelli, Monterinaldi, Palagio, Selvole and Volpaia.

The neighboring municipalities are Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Cavriglia (AR), Gaiole in Chianti and Greve in Chianti ( FI).

History

According to excavations of the village was in 2000 BC inhabited and was then probably settled by the Etruscans. The first certain document was Radda in a document of Otto III. found and is dated to the year 1002. 1041 Radda appears as Ramda Judicaria fiorentina et fesulana in the records of the monastery of Badia a Coltibuono. Due to its location between Florence and Siena, Radda was the scene of several clashes of the two republics. When the Florentine Republic aufteilte 1250 the Chianti area in three leagues ( Terziere di Radda, Gaiole and Terziere Terziere di di Castellina ), Radda was the capital of the so-called Lega del Chianti. This status was confirmed in 1415.
