Geography

Geographical location

The place is located in the Vorderpfalz between Germersheim and Landau in the Palatinate.

Waters

In the south of the municipality ( Zeiskamer mill) runs the lower reaches of the Queich that opens in Germersheim in the Rhine. In addition, flow through Zeiskam the fox creek, a derivative of the Queich around which a legend Zeiskamer climbs and the coming of the Haardt Hainbach.

History

The town was first mentioned in 774 in the Lorsch codex. Headquarters of the " nobles of Zeiskam " 960-1604 whose last representative Christof Wilhelm said. In the vicinity of Zeiskam was the Order of St. John Commandery Heimbach. It was destroyed during the Palatinate War Bauer 1525. The blazon of the arms is: " Argent, two diagonally crossed natural onions with green tubes, bewinkelt top of a floating black capital letters Z, down from a village character in the form of a Greek cross with a golden excessive blue disk ".

It goes back to a seal from 1571.

  • Gothic pointed arch, monument at the site of the former monastery church of the Commandery Heimbach (since spring 2011)

The artist Guest House Gawrisch supported in the main road 14 and preferably promotes Eastern European artists. The scholarship requires a sound academic education completed.

Culture

In Zeiskam there are some well-known far beyond the region, culturally active clubs, including the first trombone choir club in Germany was founded here.

The onion Highnesses

For the first time in 1999, the 1225 - year celebration, an onion queen was chosen with Miriam I.. Since then, a new sovereign is crowned in one-to two -year cycle for Kirweauftakt. The Highnesses represent Zeiskam nationwide at fairs, parades and even Europe in the partner municipalities. Since 2006 the onion queen is supported by an onion princess at her side, so that together they can perceive the now very numerous appointments better.

Economy

Zeiskam is known for its vegetable production. It is traditionally much especially the cultivation of onions. The agricultural cooperative " Pfalzmarkt " based in Mother City has a branch in Zeiskam. The share of agriculture in employment is declining, but there are large farms with a total of 499 ha of agricultural land, contributing still to rural character.

North of the village runs the federal highway 272 which leads from Landau (A 65 ) to Schwegenheim (B 9).

Zeiskam was formerly connected with the railway line Germersheim -Landau to the rail network. The route, however, was shut down. Since 2006 it is used by tourists for the trolley traffic.
