Patuakhali District

Patuakhali ( Bengali: পটুয়াখালী জেলা, Paṭuẏākhālī Jela ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh, which lies within the Barisal Division, the parent administrative unit. It consists of a series of so-called Chars, ie islands, but also often change due to changes in rivers and floods its position their existence.

The 3204.58 km ² large district is bordered to the north by the district of Barisal, Bhola in the east, to the south by the Bay of Bengal and on the west by the district Barguna.

The main rivers are the Andharmanik, Agunmukha, Payra, Lohalia, Patuakhali and Tentulia.

The existing since 1969 Patuakhali district is administratively divided into the six so-called Upazilas Bauphal, Dashmina, Galachipa, Kalapara, Mirzaganj and Patukhali Sadar. Within this administrative subdivision there are 67 Union Parishads (village councils), three councilors ( municipalities ) and 882 villages.

The district capital is the population of approximately 65,000 Patuakhali.
