Paul Green (playwright)

Paul Green, actually: Paul Eliot Green, ( born March 17, 1894 in Buies Creek, North Carolina; † 4 May 1981 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) was an American playwright, composer, university lecturer and writer. He won the 1927 Pulitzer-Preis/Theater for his play In Abraham 's Bosom.

Life

Paul Green was his life his home state of North Carolina deeply connected and wrote numerous pieces from 1925 about the life there. In 1927 he won the Pulitzer-Preis/Theater for his play In Abraham 's Bosom, which gave a realistic insight into the many problems of African-American citizens and at the same time denouncing the still existing racial prejudice. In 1932 he accepted the offer to go to Hollywood as a screenwriter. His first work was Cabin in the Cotton, a Südstaatenmelodrama with Richard Barthelmess and Bette Davis. At the Academy Awards in 1934 Paul Green for his work on the screenplay for State Fair received a nomination in the category Best Screenplay. Two of his plays were adapted in 1934 by the Fox Film Corporation for the screen, including Carolina with Janet Gaynor in the lead role. In later years he was one of the founders of the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. He was active in co-operation with, among others, Kurt Weill occasionally as a composer. He became increasingly known for its global commitment to human rights.
