Perry Ellis

Perry Ellis ( March 3, 1940 in Portsmouth, Virginia; † 30 May 1986 as New York City ) was an American fashion designer. The fashion company in 1978 he founded, named after him, still exists today.

Life

After leaving school at the Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, the 1957 Ellis finished, Ellis studied business administration at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. From there he moved to the New York University, where he was in 1963 with a master in the subject retail. After studying Ellis got a job in a sales business of Miller & Rhoads for fashion in Richmond, Virginia. In Richmond, he was co-founder of the company A Sunny Day. Later, Ellis got a job at the company John Meyer for Sportswear in New York City. Mid-1970, as Ellis now working for the company The Vera Companies, the Company's management commissioned him to design a new fashion collection. Ellis designed shortly after the women sportswear portfolio in November 1976. During the following years Ellis had with his designs for women sportswear great success and in 1978 founded his own fashion house Perry Ellis as a subsidiary of The Vera Companies. Ellis has one daughter, Tyler Alexandra Gallagher Ellis ( born 1984 ). Their mother, Barbara Gallagher, an American television producer, was with Perry Ellis, who lived in a same-sex partnership, friends. In May 1986, Ellis died of complications from AIDS.
