Peter Cosgrove

Sir Peter John Cosgrove AC, MC ( born July 28, 1947 in Sydney ) is an Australian former officer. Since March 28, 2014 he is the Governor-General of Australia.

Life

1965 Cosgrove joined the armed forces of Australia. Cosgrove graduated 1968, the Royal Military College Duntroon. With the first of the Royal Australian Regiment Batallon (RAR ) he went as a lieutenant to Malaysia. With the 9th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment he went shortly afterwards to Vietnam, where he commanded a platoon of infantry. For this he was awarded the Military Cross in 1971. 1980 Cosgrove was awarded the Australian National Medal. In the following years he worked as an instructor at the Infantry Centre. The mid-1980s Cosgrove commanded the 1st Royal Australian Regiment and the Batallon was recorded in 1985 for being a member in the Order of Australia. During this time he was in the United States, Britain and India. 1990 Cosgrove Director of Infantry and commander of the Infantry Centre. In 1997 he became commander of the Royal Military College Duntroon.

After the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999, there was a heavy wave of violence by pro- Indonesian militias. Cosgrove led as a Major - General, the International Force East Timor ( INTERFET ), which in the country caused by the withdrawal of the armed forces of Indonesia once again for peace and order and thus gained international notoriety. For his service in East Timor, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia, General was promoted to Lieutenant and Commander in Chief of the Army ( Chief of Army). 2001 Cosgrove was declared the Australian of the Year and received the Centenary Medal.

From July 3, 2002 until his dismissal to retire July 3, 2005 Cosgrove served as General Commander of the Armed Forces of Australia (Chief of the Defence Force ). On 23 March 2006 he was commissioned by the Queensland Government to lead the Task Force for the reconstruction of the destroyed by Cyclone Larry communities. The storm had caused severe devastation in Innisfail in northern Queensland. In recognition of its work to the new suburbs in the Bohle Plains to be named from Townsville to Cosgrove.

2009 Peter Cosgrove was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University. In 2010 he was appointed Chancellor of the University. Since 29 November 2010 he has been Chancellor of the University.

On January 28, 2014 it was announced his appointment as Governor-General designate of Australia from Buckingham Palace and the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. On March 28, 2014, he made his oath of office and thus succeeds Quentin Bryce.

Family

Peter Cosgrove is the son of an Australian Warrant Officer and is married. Cosgrove himself has three sons. One of his sons in 2005 was slightly wounded in Iraq. Cosgrove lives in Sydney.
