Peter Herbert

Peter Herbert (* February 29, 1960 in Bludenz, Vorarlberg) is an Austrian double bassist and composer.

Life and work

Peter Herbert grew up in Bregenz and attended from 1976 to 1979 the city's Conservatory. From 1981 to 1986 he studied double bass and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and from 1987 to 1989 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He lived from 1989 to 2003 in New York and since 2003 has been based in Paris.

Herbert played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1986 ), the Aydın Esen Group ( 1989-1996 ), the Paul Smoker / Phil Haynes "Double Trio " (1991), the Art Farmer Quintet (1991 /1992), the Vienna Art Orchestra (1992 ), with Bobby Previte 's "The Horse" (1995-1998), the Christian Muthspiel " Motley Mothertongue " (since 1996), the Marc Copland / John Abercrombie Quartet (1997-1999 ), David Tronzo (since 1998), Carol Robinson ( since 2003) and demSamuel Rohrer's " Tree" ( since 2004). Furthermore, he stepped in Eric Watson Trio ( since 2005) and with Joachim Kühn ( since 2005).

Herbert formed a trio with Uli Rennert and Klaus Gesing. He also worked among others with Sheila Jordan, Kenny Drew Jr., George Garzone, Christine Tobin, Steve Lacy, Bob Moses, Franz Koglmann, Lucas Niggli and Tom Rainey together. His compositions have been premiered by the Cascabel / NYC, Absolute Ensemble NYC, Janus Ensemble / Vienna, Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra and ensemble plus / Bregenz.

Between 1992 and 2002 he wrote 14 productions for the Action Theatre Ensemble Wien, furthermore for the theater cosmos Bregenz, for the theater classic and the La Voz Festival of the Americas / Santa Fe / New Mexico. Since 1991 he has worked regularly with the writer Wolfgang Mörth.

Herbert is the world at about 100 concerts per year as a solo artist and band musicians on stage. He also works as a studio musician. He has recorded around 100 CDs. In 1999, he founded the record label Internet Aziza Music. Of particular note is his involvement in the formation of the Lebanese oud player and composer Marcel Khalife, with which he undertakes concert tours since the year 2000.

Since 2008 he teaches at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz.

Awards and prizes

Herbert was in 1988 with a first prize at the first Austrian jazz competition awarded the Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio and the Eddie Gomez Jazz Masters Award from the Berklee College of Music. In 1989 he received an Achievement Award from the Boston Jazz Society for exceptional artistic abilities in jazz.

A promotion price of Vorarlberg as a composer he got in 1993. Was followed by the International Lake Constance Prize for Music in 1997 and the Hans Koller prize as " Musician of the Year 2001 ".
