Peter Millett, Baron Millett

Peter Julian Millett, Baron Millett, PC, QC ( born June 23, 1932) is a British former barrister and judge.

Life and career

Millett was born the son of Denis and Adele Millett and attended Harrow School in London and Trinity Hall, where in 1954 a Master of Arts in Classical Studies and received law degree.

From 1955 to 1957 he was a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. In 1955, he was approved by the Bar Association of the Middle Temple. In 1959 he came to Lincoln 's Inn, where he was in 1980 appointed a Bencher. From 1958 to 1986 he practiced at the Chancery Bar, and was 1962-1976 examiner and lecturer for practical transfer of ownership at the Council of Legal Education. From 1967 to 1973 Millett Junior Counsel was at the Department of Trade and Industry for Eigemtuumsübertragung and 1971-1975 member of the General Council of the Bar

From 1972 to 1973 he belonged to the Law Commission - Working party on co - ownership of the matrimonial home from 1972 to 1973 and was appointed the following year to the Attorney-General.

Millett was from 1977 to 1982 a member of the Department of Trade Insolvency Law Review Committee and in 1986 became judge of the High Court of Justice, which he remained until 1994. Since 2000 he was also non- permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong.

From 1991 to 1995 he was president of the West London Synagogue. He is Editor-in -Chief of the Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents, LexisNexis.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 1 October 1998 he was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and simultaneously appointed for life peer as Baron Millett, of St Marylebone in the City of Westminster. The official introduction to the House of Lords took place on 7 October 1998 with the support of Nicolas Browne - Wilkinson, Baron Browne - Wilkinson and Harry Woolf. His inaugural address was delivered on 23 November 1999. Was not until 2004 he volunteered again to speak.

As a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, he retired in January 2004.

He is an active Freemason and was five years Metropolitan Grand Master of London since the creation of a new Metropolitan Grand Lodge in 2003.

After his tenure, he took only very occasionally attend meetings of the House of Lords. From 2011 he was absent.

Since 11 June 2012, he is on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords Leave of Absence.

Honors

He was a Knight Bachelor in 1986 and 1994 Member of the Privy Council. Also in 1994 was Millett Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall. In 2000 he was made an honorary Doctor of Laws ( Hon LLD) from the University of London.

In 2004 he was Treasurer of Lincoln 's Inn.

Family

Millett is married to Ann Mireille Harris since 1959. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
