Peter Thuruthikonam

Peter Thuruthikonam ( born August 1, 1929 in Tiruvalla, Kerala; † 5 September 2011 in Kochi) was an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Vijayapuram.

Life

Peter began his religious studies Thuruthikonam initially in the context of Joseph's mission of home and completed his studies in theology and philosophy at the Pontifical St. Joseph Institute in Aluva. He received on 12 March 1959, and was ordained priest incardinated in the clergy of the diocese Vijayapuram. He has worked among others in Thiruvanchoor, Kanchrapara, Vadavathoor and Chengalam. Thuruthikonam engaged primarily in missionary work. In 1966 he became chancellor of the diocese, later secretary of Bishop John Ambrose Abasolo y Lecue OCD. With assumption of office of Bishop Cornelius Elanjikal 1971 he was Pro- Vicar General.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on May 5, 1988 Bishop of Vijayapuram. The Archbishop of Verapoly Cornelius Elanjikal donated to him on 4 August 1988, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Kuriakose Kunnacherry, Bishop of Kottayam, and Joseph Gabriel Fernandez, Bishop of Quilon. He was a member of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Kerala. He represented India in the CCA - FABC ( Federation of Asian Bishops ' Conferences ). On 8 May 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. its age-related resignation.

Thuruthikonam died on September 5, 2011 in a private hospital in Kochi, in which he had been admitted a few days earlier due to cardiovascular problems, a heart attack.
