On the north west bank of the Aubach empties into the waters. Water level and outflow in the Ziegelinnensee be regulated by a weir located on the north shore. The average water depth is 2.8 meters.

History

The Pfaff pond ( Low German: " Papendiek " ) was created by a dam embankment (later called Spieltordamm ) at the north end probably shortly after the city was founded in the 12th century, first as a mill pond in a once swampy valley. The waters had a about 350 meters southerly extension to the level of the castle road, where the mill dam was limited to the south and an occupied since 1178 water mill operated originally. From here the water flowed into the castle lake. A Count's mill was in operation until the 19th century. On Aubach was a second mill, which passed into the possession of the cathedral chapter, renamed as Bischofsmühle and was operated until 1914. Frequent bone of contention between the counts and the cathedral chapter, which could also take the mill pond in possession, was the storage level of the water. The canons that time still on the east bank ordered their gardens, were named the resulting popularly name " Pfaff pond ".

The name of the northern boundary, Spieltordamm, is derived from the Middle German word " game" from that pile means. A number of piles then protected the achievable through a so-called Spieltor dam. The Spieltor, a guard and Torschreiberhaus, was built in 1710 and torn down in 1816. The dam was fixed until 1826 expanded. The water of the pond Pfaff dined once even a moat.

Georg Adolf Demmler began around 1840 with the straightening of the Pfaff pond bank and the development of the southern and western shores. The pond received its present enclosure and the rows of lime trees. From this period dates the Arsenal ( West Bank), which is the headquarters of the Interior Ministry of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern today. 1865 first buildings were constructed on the east bank, such as a school building of 1868/70, which housed the old Fridericianum and which last used as a vocational school. There are plans under which after a modernization here is to settle a private college. In the same street is the Kuetemeyersche Foundation from 1893 /94 which was built according to plans by Gustav Hamann with a facade in the Johann -Albrecht- style and was until around 1998 seat of the registry office.

1895 Schliemann Memorial, a life-size bronze bust of the sculptor Hugo Berwald was on a pedestal of polished red granite, revealed. With the construction of gas-fired power station in the Renaissance style on the north shore of the pond Pfaff, which was operated until 1944 and still exists today, Schwerin in 1904 was first supplied with electricity.

On Pentecost Sunday of 1933 was held on the Pfaff pond as part of the "Action against the Un-German Spirit ", a book burning on a floating island instead.

On the south bank the created in 1973 by Stephan Horota sculpture was erected shield children, now the site has changed, the sculpture now stands on the southeast corner of the Pfaff pond.

An existing still in GDR times stand on the Schliemann - terrace on the east side was demolished after the turn. After investigations, the city built in December 2004 due to ailing bank protection a chain link fence around the pond Pfaff, a measure which provoked a storm of indignation in the population. Currently the bank to be reattached with urban development funds and the fence is removed again. Since the bank protection for safety on the southeast shore could not be canceled, the shoreline of this 200 -meter-long construction phase by about 1.50 meters in the Pfaff pond had to be moved inside. The renovation work on the east, south and west banks were terminated in June 2009, the renovation of the North Shore in October 2010.

On Pfaffenteich events are regularly aligned, such as Dragon boat races, bicycle races, art installations and various festivals. The modernized south facing terrace is used as a restaurant, especially in summer. In the summer season, a fountain is operated in the waters. On the Pfaff pond swims since 1937 swan island on which a thatched accommodation is available. The current Swan house dates from the 1970s and in 1981, 1999 and 2010 reconstructed.

Ferry service

With expansion of the city to the Pfaff pond around this quickly became regarded as a problem, whereby a certain Johann Bosselmann gave the impetus to set up a ferry crossing over the small body of water. This was realized in 1879 in the steering operation, starting in 1928 with motorboats. 1955, 1924 built and formerly open Spreewald ferry was lowered into the water after reconstruction. This watercraft is after further conversions until today on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the compound in 1979 in " Peter males ", the name of the Schwerin Castle Ghost, renamed in operation and was. Today, the ferry operated by the transport Schwerin April to October runs four stops at the option of the passengers.
