Phil Stein

Philip John " Phil" Stone (* September 13, 1913 in Toronto, Ontario, † April 4, 1987 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played 1933-1942 at several IAHL, AHL and NHL teams.

Career

Stone played in 1930 for the Toronto Marlboros in the junior Ontario Hockey Association. In the senior level, he played in the Toronto Mercantile Hockey League for the Packers and Stockyard McColl Frontenacs, but also in the OHA with the Toronto Nationals.

In 1936 he moved to the Syracuse Stars, with whom he initially ran aground in the International Hockey League and from 1938 in the International - American Hockey League. There he played together with Gordie Drillon. The majority of the season 1939/40 he spent at the Providence Reds. Here was also goalkeeper Mike Karakas, the former winner of the Calder Memorial Trophy, active. In addition to several assignments with the Omaha Knights of the American Hockey Association, where he represented Johnny Mowers, lent him the Providence Reds for a game to the Toronto Maple Leafs from where he replaced Turk Broda. It was his only game in the National Hockey League and it ended after overtime 2-2 draw.

He spent the following two seasons with the New Haven Eagles in the American Hockey League. After another year, in which he had guarded the gate for the Toronto Research Colonels in the OHA and the Stafford Industries in the Mercantile Toronto Hockey League, he ended his active career.

After he retired from the sport of ice hockey, he was sports director for twelve years and eight years Manager at the Leaside Memorial Community Gardens and Sales Representative of Hiram Walker Distillery. His body was buried in his hometown in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
