Phil Wilson (trombonist)

Elder Wilson Phillips Jr. ( born January 19, 1937 in Belmont / Massachusetts) is an American jazz trombonist.

Wilson began at the age of fifteen, playing professionally in jazz bands from the area of his home town. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music and the Navy School of Music and played from 1955 to 1957 in Herb Pomeroy's big band. He left the New England Conservatory to perform with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, and was after military service from 1962 to 1965 a member of Woody Herman's band. Since 1966 he has taught at the Berklee School of Music.

In the 1960s, Wilson wrote numerous arrangements for Buddy Rich, directed several big bands and worked as a sideman, among others with Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and Clark Terry. He was also a guest soloist with the Boston Pops and European big bands like the hr-Bigband and NDR Big Band.

Wilson taught jazz at the New England Conservatory and gave jazz courses at Harvard University, Yale University, Kansas State University, the University of California, the Sidney Conservatorium and the Frankfurt Conservatory. Since 1966, Wilson leads the Berklee Thursday Night Dues band (since 1985 under the name Rainbow Band ), played in the Terri Lyne Carrington musicians such as Cyrus Chestnut, John Scofield, Ernie Watts and Roy Hargrove.
