Piarist Church, Vienna

The Piaristenkirche Maria Treu is a Baroque Roman Catholic parish church on Jodok Finch Place in the 8th district of Vienna Josefstadt.

History

The church's name refers to the Josefstädterstraße miraculous image of Mary Faithful, which was the occasion of the plague in 1713 painted by Josef Herz and transferred from the present pain chapel in the new church. From 1721 the patronage was for this image on " Maria Treu ".

The church was from 1698 to 1719 - built as a monastery church of Piaristen that they also had a high school in der Josefstadt - presumably, designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt. A leading role was the master stonemason Sebastian Regondi and Joseph Winkler.

1753 reconstruction was completed by Mathias Gerl.

Inside the church there is a major work of Franz Anton Maulbertsch: five frescoes in the dome created the greatest painters of the Austrian late baroque in the years 1752 and 1753. In the center is a representation of the Assumption of Mary into heaven, while the edge form scenes from the Old and New Testaments. All figures are intertwined, like a surging river; in the composition dominates the color of the contour. The construction, which is about to Daniel Gran, the early Paul Troger and later with the classicism in the foreground, resigns in favor of the play of light and color.

In 1890 the church was restored for the first time. The facade ( borromineske Serpentine ) is the only example of a Viennese Konvexfassade on the type of Roman churches of Santi Luca e Martina and Santa Maria della Pace of Pietro da Cortona.

The Church of Maria Treu is minor since 1949 in the rank of a Basilica.

In 1862, the Maria -Treu- Gasse was named after the church in der Josefstadt.
