Piet Dankert

Pieter ( Piet ) Dankert ( born January 8, 1934 in Stiens, † June 21, 2003 in Perpignan ) was a Dutch politician, member and representative of the social democratic PvdA.

Life

Dankert first worked after school education and studies in education, before he was elected in 1968 at the age of 34 years in the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. There he became the political spokesman of his party or faction for foreign policy and defense matters. In addition, he also ran European policy and advocated for an increased cooperation between the EG-/EU-Statten. In the late 1970s changed Dankert his field of activity of the Dutch Second Chamber of the European Parliament, whose fortunes he codetermined as president from 1982 until 1984. In the third cabinet of Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers (1989-1994) he held the post of Secretary of State for European Affairs. Then he returned as an MP back in the European parliament.

Dankert distinguished himself there, especially in budgetary debates and worked as a member of various ( parliamentary ) committees of the Council of Europe, NATO and the WEU. In his last years as an MEP his party, he sat down in particular and for future accession of Turkey to the EU.
